BIG PRIDE || little library
Inspired by Epilogue Book Cafe's Reading Rainbows, and with a sudden increase of nationwide book bans in classrooms and libraries, Ernest & Hadley Booksellers will launch our very own BIG PRIDE // little library (aka "'lil Pride-brary") on June 21, 2023. We, too, believe queer youth should be allowed to see themselves represented in as many media forms as possible.
Our 'lil Pride-brary will be safely nestled in our back courtyard and is open 24/7/365. Geared toward providing LGBTQ+ youth with accessible literature, it is easy to make contributions* to the box through our website!
Here's how it works:
ONLINE | We have some suggested titles below, but you can purchase young adult, middle grade or nonfiction queer books, indicating in the Order Comments that this purchase** is for the Pride box. You can also let us decide which books to pick by making your contribution here.
IN STORE | In-person patrons can also purchase a book to donate by letting the cashier know at check-out that the book is for the Pride-brary/Pride box. You may also simply drop off donations from your own library at the front desk during store hours.
“The idea is that queer youth, or anyone who wants a free queer book, can just pick it up,” Gaby Iori, owner of Epilogue Books explains (Madison Ward for Chapelboro.com, 11/2022). Click here to read more about how Gabi's Chapel Hill store helped grow this concept.
* Please keep in mind that Ernest & Hadley Booksellers is not a 501(c)(3) and cannot provide a receipt for tax purposes, nor adjust the purchase so that is not taxed (unless you can provide your own tax exempt ID at checkout.) We can offer a 10% discount to cover the tax obligation, so for that very reason...
** Please keep orders to donate separate from book orders you intend to keep! (See * note above)
